Like the starfish and sea cucumbers it is classified as a species of the echinoderm. It inhabits areas with strong tides and attaches itself to the upper parts of dead coral and sponges. It spreads out its arms, then with mucus secreted from its arms it forms a web-like net to catch suspended particles and plankton. Examples of this species are rarely found near Okinawa.
