Green turtle
Distributed in tropical and subtropical waters around the world. In Japan, nesting mainly occurs in the Ogasawara Islands and south of Kagoshima including Okinawa. It has an egg-shaped carapace. The lower jaw is finely serrated allowing the green turtle to graze on seaweed. In 1999, successful breeding of this species took place at Churaumi Aquarium leading to a breeding award from the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
