Although it is widely distributed in the tropical zones of the Indo-Pacific, there are few collected specimens. In Japan, the first time this species was reported was in 2006 when it was caught in Nago Bay, Okinawa Prefecture. This was officially recorded as the first time the species was identified in Japan. Its distinctive feature is its extremely large jaw and it is the largest species of moray eel in the Uropterygiinae sub-family.
