Fire urchin species
※Off display.
In Japan, this sea urchin is found from Sagami Bay to Kyushu. It is generally not seen because it inhabits in slightly deeper waters. Its spines have a toxin that can cause painful stings if touched. This individual displayed was collected by unmanned submarine on a seafloor of mud and gravel at a depth near 200 meters.
