It looks similar to the false kelpfish (Sebastiscus marmoratus) that is in the same genus, and for a long time they were thought to be the same species. However, it was determined they are different species, and can be distinguished by the speckled patterns and borders on their bodies. The Japanese name of this fish is ukkari kasago, ukkari means thoughtless, as if by not being careful or paying attention it can be mistaken as a false kelpfish. In Japan, its distribution is south of Miyagi Prefecture and on the coasts of the East China Sea but they are hardly ever seen off the coasts of the Ryukyu Islands.
