This species of triggerfish was first described in 1989 based on two specimens that were collected off of Kume Island. It is in the same genus as the white-banded triggerfish. The individual on exhibit was the third discovery in Japan, and only the second case in the world of an individual successfully reared in captivity. This rare species of triggerfish is the only species of its kind to live at depths of around 150 meters. Its body has yellowy patches, and there are three distinctive black lines between its eyes.
