Stegophiura sladeni is a species of brittle star, which are closely related to starfish. Its central disk and arms clearly distinguish it from a starfish. Usually it is partially hidden under the sand.  When it senses its prey, it emerges from the sand, and uses its flexible arms to move across the seabed towards its prey. This species has relatively short arms compared to other species of brittle star.
