Red deepwater scorpionfish
※Off display.
This species of deep-sea bristly scorpionfish is widely distributed in the deep-seas of the West Pacific Ocean including around Japan. In recent years, research conducted in Japan revealed that the red deepwater scorpionfish was not a single species, but was actually three different species. The other two are Lythrichthys longimanus and Lythrichthys cypho. The fact they are different species was determined by the differences in the shapes of the scales, colors within the mouth, and DNA.
