Distributed in temperate and tropical zones around the world. Body length reaches 25cm. Pointed spines cover the whole body. When threatened they inflate their body by inhaling large amounts of water into their stomach, and the spines become erect. They are called the long-spine porcupinefish, but they only have around 350 spines. Their flesh is nontoxic, and enjoyed in the Okinawan soup abasa-jiru.
