Distributed across the Indo-Pacific. In Japan, from Kushimoto in Wakayama Prefecture southwards including Amami Oshima. Reaches 35 cm in length. Often found in areas of shallow coral reefs with good tidal flow. Body colors vary widely between regions. Mature fish have convex foreheads.
