In Japan, distributed from Hokkaido southwards. Its body is usually translucent, but depending on its environment they change from dark brown to white to translucent. Using its strong jaw muscles, it tears its prey with a cephalopod beak. The meat of bigfin reef squid is delicious, and is used in Okinawa’s squid-ink soup (ikasumijiru). At Churaumi Aquarium, captive breeding took place in 1978, 1984 and 1985. In 1984, we were able to raise a 2nd generation until they laid their eggs. The aquarium has received a breeding award from the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
