Threetooth puffer

  • World's First
  • Popular
  • Rareness:★★★★

A species of pufferfish found at depths from100 to 300 meters. It has three strong frontal teeth, and when threatened it inflates its belly flap to discourage predators. The scales are arranged in a radial pattern with jagged protrusions, and the top and bottom scales overlap so that they interlock. Because of this, we now understand how it can fold the fan so close to its body, forming almost a smooth surface.
Churaumi Aquarium was the first place to successfully care for them in captivity. It is commonly known that this pufferfish can inflate its body.  However, through collaborative research with the Smithsonian Museum, it was confirmed in 2023 that it inflates its body by ingesting water.

Scientific name Triodon macropterus
English name Threetooth puffer
