Hagfish are fish that have a skull but no vertebral column, which makes them unusual compared to other bony fish such as sea breams and tunas. Its eyes are under the skin and seen as spots on the surface. When disturbed it secretes large quantities of mucus. This species from Okinawa was collected at a depth below 600 meters.
