Japanese sawshark

Distributed in Japan from Hokkaido to Okinawa. It is found on silt sea floors from the coast to deep sea areas. Saw-like teeth aremollusk found along its protruded snout, and halfway down the snout there are two long barbels. It feeds on small fish, crustaceans and mollusks. During feeding at the aquarium, staff have seen the shark pin down its prey with its long snout. Breeding of this species has been a success at the Churaumi Aquarium and the offspring are currently being reared here.
