Reaches 15 cm in length. Females are smaller in size than males. Identified by its large eyes, and hard scales that cover the whole body. It has an oval bioluminescent organ on the sides of its lower jaw. Symbiotic bioluminescent bacteria within the organs produce light. This species has been successfully bred at the Churaumi Aquarium.
