The Splitfin flashlightfish has a large torch-like organ under each eye that contains symbiotic bioluminescent bacteria. It flashes light by inverting the bioluminescent organ. Individuals found in Japan are large for this species and reach around 15 cm in length. They are distributed at depths below 100 meters.
