Mainly distributed in the East Pacific Ocean from Baja California Mexico to southern Peru, particularly around the Galapagos Islands. In Japan, they can be occasionally seen around the islands of Okinawa. Its shape resembles the green sea turtle but the carapace (upper shell) and plastron (lower shell) is grayish black. The oval carapace narrows to a point at the rear. In 2017, the world’s first successful captive breeding of this species took place at Churaumi Aquarium.
