This species of damselfish is found at depths from 65 to 175 meters.  In Japan, they are distributed off the east coast of the Izu Peninsula and around Okinawa. The Japanese chromis (Chromis mitationis) also inhabits the same water depth, but the Okinawa chromis has two dark longitudinal stipes on its sides and the pelvic fin is slightly smaller. It is less common than the Japanese chromis.
