In Japan, this sea urchin is found from Sagami Bay to Kyushu. It is generally not seen because it inhabits in slightly deeper waters. Its spines have a toxin that can cause painful stings if touched. This individual displayed was collected by unmanned submarine on a seafloor of mud and gravel at a depth near 200 meters.
