This species is a pelagic (offshore) jellyfish although it is sometimes seen near coast after getting caught in waves and tides. There are many lumps of granular cnidocyte on the surface of its umbrella. Its cnidarian venom is strong and extremely painful if stung. Its color varies from purple to brown. This species is bioluminescent and when stimulated it gives off a blueish white light.
