Amboina cardinalfish

In Japan, this species of cardinalfish is distributed south of Yakushima, Kagoshima Prefecture. Many are found in the brackish water of rivers and estuaries, and they form schools between mangrove roots. The first half of its first dorsal fin is black, it has a distinctive black spot at the base of its tail fin, and it has a black line from its snout through the eye to near the gills. This species is estimated to lay over 3,000 eggs in a single spawning. The fertilized eggs are held and guarded in the mouth of the male fish until they hatch.
