The dash-and-dot goatfish has a pair of long barbells under its lower jaw. This species is larger than other goatfish reaching 60 cm in length. Its long barbells are equipped with sensory cells to help find food. It usually eats bristle worms and crustations that hide under the sand. It sometimes sticks its face in the sand when searching for food.
