This species was previously considered the same as P.japonicus which had been discovered in 1955. In 1994, it was differentiated as a separate species. The small furrow lobster is smaller, and has a rounder tail fan, than P. japonicus. This species of small furrow lobster seems more populated in main Island of Okinawa.
