Siphonophores, including this species, are colonial hydrozoans. The colony is formed from a diverse array of zooids each with specific roles such as catching prey, swimming, or breeding. When it swims, the two differently sized swimming bells, located at the tip of the colony, pulsate. The swimming bells often come off when being reared, but quickly grow back. It is a large species, with colonies that can exceed 3 meters, and can sometimes be seen from the surface.
