Yellow tang

Distributed in the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. In Japan, from Kochi Prefecture southwards. This species is commonly seen in coral reef areas. The juvenile fish are seen in branched corals while adults live on deeper reef slopes. They are herbivorous, and mainly feed on algae. The fixed peduncle spine is white and noticeable. They are popular as an aquarium fish, however, because they are herbivorous it is hard to keep them in captivity when feeding regular fish food. They can be reared in aquariums with plenty of sunshine, and are useful in cleaning the tank of seaweed.
