Crocus giant clam / Boring clam
Distributed on coral reefs of the Ryukyu Islands and Northern Australia. It is the smallest species in the subfamily Tridacninae with the shell reaching around 15cm in length. When a young clam attaches to the bedrock it burrows into the rock. As it grows it keeps burrowing into the rock until it completely embeds itself leaving only the fleshy mantel above the surface of the rock. Amongst the giant clams, this species is considered a delicacy. Large individuals of this type are now rare due to overfishing.
