Double-lined fusilier
Distributed in the tropical and subtropical waters of the Indian Ocean and the West Pacific. In Japan, juveniles and young fish are seen in south Japan with larger numbers south of Amami Oshima, and around the Ogasawara Islands.
It reaches around 30 cm in length. They move as large schools in areas with good coastal tides, coral reefs and rocky shores. It has a spindle-shaped body with black tips on their tail fins. They appear to be blue when swimming underwater but once they die or are taken out of the water, their body turns pink or red. This species is designated as the prefectural fish of Okinawa. They are a popular target for fishing and easily fished with a sabiki rig. They can be served as fried fish, or grilled in a salt crust, or even prepared as sashimi.
