Little tuna / Kawakawa / Mackerel tuna

Distributed in the temperate and tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific, including south Japan. It reaches 1 meter in length. It looks similar to skipjack tuna and the frigate tuna, but identified by small black dots under its pectoral fins. They do not form large schools like skipjack tuna, but form small groups in shallow coastal waters and migrate. Usually skipjack tuna and tuna swim at a high speed with their mouth half-open to enable gas exchange. Rearing them in a small tank is difficult, however, they are being kept and displayed in a large tank. The individuals displayed in the aquarium were mainly caught in fixed nets. They are delicious prepared as sashimi.
