Widely inhabits tropical and temperate waters around the world. They swim near surface in large shoals. They are spindle-shaped and extremely fast swimmers. They reach 1.2 meters in length. They feed on a variety of animals such as crustaceans, squid, octopus and other fish. This species is very important for commercial and game fishing and is often caught using single line fishing and trawling. They are served as sashimi, tataki (seared tuna), dried and canned fish.
