Hawaiian ladyfish

Distributed across the Indo-Pacific including southern Japan. It reaches 60 cm in length. It is a primitive bony fish, and is thought to be a close relation to eels. It is identified by its cylindrical body and large eyes.  They are easily injured by scrapes so are very difficult to transport, and have often died even after transferring them into tanks. However, Churaumi Aquarium has succeeded in keeping them within a large tank for the first time. They are called gunan (fifth son) in the Okinawan dialect as they have many fine bones and are not suitable as food.

Scientific name Elops hawaiensis
English name Hawaiian ladyfish
