American manatee

Manatees are herbivorous marine mammals. They are found in the tropical and subtropical west Atlantic along coastal areas, rivers, lakes and estuaries. Manatees are thought to have been the inspiration for mermaids. The order Sirenia has three species of manatee, and one species of dugong.  They are all endangered species, and are designated as internationally protected animals.
