Distributed throughout the Indo-Pacific and the Red Sea. In Japan, found from Chiba Prefecture southwards. Reaches 6 cm in length. Inhabits sandy bottoms near the coasts of rocky shores and coral reefs. In Okinawa, juveniles form schools in tide pools. Its beautiful gold lines give it its Japanese name.
