Distributed across the Indo-Pacific. In Japan, from Chiba Prefecture southwards. Found at depths less than 12 meters on coral reef areas and rocky shores. They are a commonly seen species. Reaches 19 cm in length. The juveniles are found in floating seaweed or in tide pools with other fish. They are omnivorous, but prefer invertebrates. The Indo-Pacific sergeant is popular in aquariums. They lay eggs on rocks and the male guards the eggs.
