Inhabits the coral reef slopes of the central and western Pacific except for Hawaii. In Japan from Kochi Prefecture southwards and the Ogasawara Islands. Males have a turquoise line under the eye. Females are reddish brown with a white spot. Identified by teeth shaped in a form of a parrot beak. It feeds on algae.
