Inhabits rocky shores and coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific and central Pacific. In Japan, from Chiba Prefecture southwards. The juvenile fish look completely different to adults. Arched white stripes are lined across its dark blue base. Its Japanese name comes from these ripples. Reaches 40 cm in length.
