Distributed across the Indo-Pacific and central Pacific. In Japan, from Suruga Bay southwards. They are herbivorous and mainly feed on algae. It has two large orange forward-hooked spines at the base of the tail. It reaches 50 cm in length. Juveniles are popular for aquariums. The male develops threadlike filaments on the top and bottom ends of the tail fin.
