Distributed throughout Indian Ocean and the central to western Pacific Ocean. In Japan, from Chiba Prefecture southwards, Hachijo-jima, and the Ogasawara Islands. Body length is around 10cm. Light colored at the front of the body and darker at the rear. They have a distinctive hovering pose with their tail and dorsal fins extended. They inhabit coral reefs and reef slopes with good tidal flow, forming schools or living in pairs.
