This species used to inhabit both Amami oshima and Okinawa Island, however, in 1980 this species was extinct on Okinawa Island. Efforts are being made by locals to repopulate areas by releasing Ryukyu ayu-fish in Fukuchi Dam and Genka River in northern Okinawa.
