Distributed across the Indian Ocean and the West Pacific Ocean including the Ryukyu Islands. It reaches 70 cm in length and is fished for food. It inhabits coral reefs and rocky areas offshore. They have been observed to swim along the reef edge alone or in small groups in search of prey. Sometimes they are caught near the ocean floor at depths below 100 meters. As described in its name, it has yellow spots scattered along the side of its body. These spots fade when they die.
