Distributed in the tropical and subtropical waters of the Indo-Pacific including southern Japan. When it reaches 20 cm in length, patterns of small black spots appear on the sides of its body. In Okinawa, they are observed to form schools and follow small fish into inner harbors and estuaries to feed.
