Found along the coasts and offshore in tropical and subtropical waters of the Indo-Pacific including southern Japan. It reaches 70 cm in length.  It swims near the surface, even in the aquarium. It looks similar to the needlescaled queenfish (Scomberoides tol) but can be distinguished by spotted patterns on the side of its body, and by the size of its mouth.
