Juveniles are black with an orange border. Its appearance is thought to mimic a Polycladida flatworm which is poisonous. As it grows their appearance and shape changes. The young fish become more triangular with a clear white band near the center of the body. When it becomes an adult, it is shaped like a spade and the colors are more distinctive. It can be distinguished from other batfish by its pointy snout.
