The longtooth grouper is a member of the Serranidae family. It usually reaches 60 cm in length, although in rare cases fishermen have caught individuals up to 1.3 meters. There are six irregular diagonal bands on the sides of its body, which fade as it matures. This species is considered a delicacy and is prepared as sashimi or in a nabe (hot pot).
