Oriental butterflyfish
Found in Taiwan, the Philippines, and in Japan from central Honshu southwards. Reaches 20 cm in length. It is a relatively common species of butterflyfish and is the most adapted to northern latitudes. The black band covering the eyes is considered to be camouflage. They inhabit coral reefs or rocky shores and are seen pecking algae on top of bedrock. Juveniles have a pattern that looks like an eye at the end of its dorsal fin. This “eye” eventually fades when it becomes an adult.
