Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium has various educational programs for schools, medical institutions, welfare facilities, and related organizations as part of public awareness. Through in-person and online activities, using our aquarium exhibits and our research, we can introduce fascinating aspects of the ocean and the creatures that dwell in it. Over the past 10 years, we’ve had the pleasure to share the appeal of the ocean environment and its creatures with 1,728 organizations, and a total of 150,090 people.
Extracurricular activities relating to unit lessons at schools and career education are a popular request. The aquarium provides opportunities for students to interview aquarium staff, behind-the-scenes tours of aquarium facilities, and work-experience to give a better understanding of careers. Aquarium staff also visit elementary schools, junior high schools, and high schools to provide students with opportunities to learn about the creatures of the ocean via lecturer dispatch, creature observation programs, picture-card shows, and other activities. (In 2024, 204 events, 8,228 people)
For individuals who may find it difficult to visit the aquarium, including residents of hospitals and welfare facilities, we can bring a mobile aquarium to them. Hospitalized children and those in special needs schools can learn online through remote classes and can enjoy the aquarium exhibits through loaned audiovisual materials. Our tactile observation program allows the visually impaired to learn about the shapes and characteristics of sea creatures by touching specimens and replicas. (In 2024, 83 events, 4,960 people)
For the development of the next generation of staff, we assist students studying in specialized fields including animal rearing, animal nursing and museum curation.
