Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium has published a paper on the discovery of a new species of squat lobster, through joint research conducted with Dr. Osawa Masayuki from Estuary Research Center, Shimane University. We are happy to announce the world’s first exhibit of this species: Eumunida balteipes.

The discovery of a new species! The world’s first exhibit of Eumunida balteipes.

≪シマツノコシオリエビ≫
Scientific name:Eumunida balteipes

For over 10 years we have exhibited this species as Eumunida pacifica [squat lobster species], however, it became clear that it was a new species. There were 25 species of Eumunida that had been found around the world and out of these 9 species are known in Japan. Part of its Japanese name [shima], and part of its scientific name [balteipes] both refer to the stripes on its legs which is a key feature of this species.

Exhibit duration

Until the end of March 2019 (Currently Scheduled)
*Exhibit may close depending on the condition of the animals.

Size of Exhibit

Two individuals 15 cm, measuring from the tips of its pincers to the tips of its tail

The specimens of the new species Eumunida balteipes, were taken from a depth of 612 meters along with deep sea water through an intake pipe of the Okinawa Deep Sea Water Research Center on Kume Island. For seven years these specimens have been reared at the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium managed under the Churashima Foundation and through this a portion of its ecology has been clarified such as its feeding behaviors and how it holds territories amongst other similar species. Our hope is though continued rearing and exhibits, we can learn more about its ecology and reproduction.
