Three consecutive years of successful captive breeding of the Kuroiwa’s ground gecko a designated Natural Monument of Okinawa Prefecture!

At Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, for three consecutive years, we have succeeded in captive breeding of the Kuroiwa’s ground gecko, a designated Natural Monument of Okinawa Prefecture. Although breeding the Kuroiwa’s ground gecko is difficult, in 2021, after years of research, we accomplished the world’s first successful captive breeding. We have continued successful breeding each consecutive year.

The Kuroiwa’s ground gecko on exhibit is a young gecko that hatched in this facility last Autumn. Through this successful breeding, we were able to observe and clarify behaviors such as incubation temperature and growth rate which would be difficult to do in the wild.

Kuroiwa’s ground gecko is facing population decline due to illegal collecting, and damage to its natural habitat. We will continue to improve breeding techniques to help contribute to the conservation of this species.
