Successful breeding of Eiffinger’s tree frogs, the only frogs in Japan that raise their young.

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium has successfully bred Eiffinger’s tree frogs, and they are now on display for the first time at the aquarium.

Eiffinger’s tree frogs
Scientific name:Kurixalus eiffingeri

In Japan, this species is only found on Ishigaki Island and Iriomote Island. It spawns in tree hollows that collect water. Females lay unfertilized eggs for their larvae to feed on. This is an extremely rare reproductive behavior.

The Eiffinger’s tree frogs on exhibit are the hatchlings that emerged from the water a year ago at the aquarium. This species is facing the threat of extinction due to habitat loss. Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is proactively researching the ecology of Eiffinger’s tree frogs through breeding to aid in their conservation.
