The first exhibit of a blotchy swell shark pup in six years.

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is pleased to announce the first exhibit of a blotchy swell shark pup in six years.

Scientific name:Cephaloscyllium umbratile

The blotchy swell shark is a species of catshark reaching 1.2 meters in length. As it matures, the dark horizontal stripes on its body change to spots. It lays two milky-white eggs that have coiled tendrils. After nine to thirteen months, a 20 cm shark pup hatches. Four years after hatching, it will reach 60 cm in length.

The blotchy swell shark egg laid on February 11th, 2024, was displayed from July 17th at Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium’s Small Life in the Deep Sea corner. The exhibited pup hatched on the 31st of December, it is a male, 20 cm in length.
