A world’s first! Successful breeding of the yellowspotted trevally.

In a world first, Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium has successfully bred the yellowspotted trevally, and begun to exhibit the offspring in the individual water tanks of the Coral Reef Gallery.

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium displays adult yellowspotted trevally in the Kuroshio Sea Tank. Spawning is observed at certain times of year. We collect their fertilized eggs, and place them in a special tank to hatch and rear.
During the breeding process, we conducted repeated experiments while varying several factors, including the type of initial feed and the timing of feeding. The research revealed that copepods, a crustacean similar to shrimp, are an ideal food source during early larval development. This finding, and ongoing improvements in husbandry methods, led to the world’s first successful breeding of this species.
Currently, the juvenile fish have reached 5 cm in length. They look similar to their parents, but are slightly taller and more rounded. The star-shaped spots (yellow to gold), which give the yellowspotted trevally its name, haven’t appeared on their sides yet, but dark bands are visible.

Yellowspotted trevally
Scientific name:Turrum fulvoguttatum

The yellowspotted trevally is a species of jack. It is distributed across the Indo-Pacific region, including the Ryukyu Archipelago. Fish over 70 cm in length are consumed for food. Yellowspotted trevally inhabit rocky and coral reefs, but have been caught in the open sea at depths below 100 meters. In 2022, its taxonomic classification was changed from Carangoides fulvoguttatus to Turrum fulvoguttatum.

At Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, we will continue research to shed light on this species, as they are an essential aquatic resource, and to utilize this knowledge to contribute to the conservation and sustainable use of resources.
